Percentage decrease from Base Year

Calculation formula for generating automated target values based on a percentage reduction over time.

Description

Percentage decrease is a calculation formula particularly useful for sustainability targets but can also be applied in other contexts. It generates target values by starting from a base year value and applying a Percentage decrease  for each year up to the specified target year.

The formula offers a simple way to create multi-year reduction targets, and the dynamic link to base year values ensures consistency.

Requirements

The calculation formula requires that:

  • The measure you configure must have yearly periodicity.

  • The measure must have another column using the Baseline Value formula, which in turn requires a column for target values. Thus, you need three columns: Target Value, Baseline Value/Base Year, and Percentage Decrease to use the formula.

  • You must configure the Percentage Decrease formula in the object window. This in turn requires a product license.

Configuration

  1. Open the measure in the object window and select Measure Settings.

  2. Ensure you have a measure data column that defines your base year.

  3. Open the settings for the measure data column where you want to apply the formula, or create a new one.

  4. Select the Calculation tab.

  5. Choose the formula Percentage Decrease . Select your measure data column containing your base year as the Base Year Column. The base year will then be displayed to the right. This year becomes the starting point for the reduction. If you need to change the year, do so in the base year column, which will also update the base year here.

  6. Click + Add to specify the target year and desired reduction.

  7. Enter the reduction in percent, between 0 and 100, and the target year. For example, if you enter 10% and a target year, the value will decrease linearly (straight line) by a total of 10% by the target year. Define the reduction you wish to achieve by a given year and enter it accordingly.

  8. If needed, you can add additional reductions. This causes the line to adopt a new slope for the next period—steeper or flatter. You always enter the total desired reduction from the base year to the target year, even when adding multiple periods.

  9. When finished, confirm the formula by clicking the checkmark in the lower-right corner. Add your column so it appears in the chart settings as a series, to verify the result.
